Dr. Alan Weaver
Alan Weaver has been a missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ for 27 years. On a trip to India in 1980 he became aware of the fact that pastors overseas struggled under heavy burdens without the advantage of the training, encouragement and resources available to pastors in the United States. This began his lifelong passion to serve pastors and church leaders around the world.
In 1985 he moved behind the iron curtain to train and encourage pastors in Hungary. He returned to the U.S. in 1999 to work on a doctorate in cross-cultural leadership development. He now serves with the International School of Leadership and travels to several countries each year to teach pastors, church leaders, and missionaries.
Tiwan, Pastor in Bhutan
Tiwan* is a pastor of a twenty-member house church in Bhutan. Organized Christianity is illegal in Bhutan and so Tiwan has no opportunity to receive training. There are an estimated 60-80 house churches in Bhutan and 40 of their pastors secretly came to the TOPIC conference in neighboring Darjeeling, India. “Because of the government people are afraid to share with the native people who are relatively untouched with the Gospel,” he says. “I have a real burden for my people….I have come here for the teaching and new ideas, and courage, and encouragement. This conference was exactly, exactly what I needed. I am really, really thankful to you."
A quote from Angie Dexter Campus Crusade for Christ-Mexico
“I had so many questions about team interactions before I came to Cuernavaca. I feel like after this conference I understand why team dynamics were hard, confusing or frustrating. I now feel equipped and hopeful for my teams in the future. I can’t wait to put these principles into practice!"
For those with a heart for the shepherds and leaders of God’s people.
This is an exciting time to be part of God’s Kingdom. But it is a good news/bad news situation.
The good news is the church is growing exponentially worldwide.
It is amazing to see how God is working in these days to grow his Kingdom despite the forces arrayed against it. Forty-five years ago, there were only 500 believers in Nepal. Today there are over 1 million. Similar statistics can be found in Africa, India, China and South America.
But… three million pastors have little or no opportunity for pastoral help and training.
God is raising up churches in many villages around the world, but often those leading these fledgling churches are themselves babes in Christ. They hold down jobs and serve their church as best they can, yet they have never been to a school or conference. They are acutely aware of their responsibility and need of training, but it is just not available to them.
As the Gospel spreads around the world and national peoples take the responsibility of evangelism and leadership in their own country, the strategic question is how to support them with the resources and training that they need and desire. Pastors in many parts of the world have to pastor several churches, often with little or no pay. They are willing to do this but many are tired, beaten down, and frustrated.
They need someone to come alongside and help.
International School of Leadership
The International School of Leadership is a special resource team of Campus Crusade for Christ designed to meet the training needs of pastors and missionaries around the world.
ISOL staff travel to where the training is needed and teach on site to pastors who are unable to attend traditional serminaries. When national seminaries need additional faculty to teach, ISOL staff act as visiting faculty to support national pastoral training programs. ISOL seeks to provide individualized mentoring and coaching where possible and recruits pastors in the United States to come along side young pastors overseas who have no one to help them.
